National Volunteer Week

Today marks the beginning of National Volunteer Week.

The work we do for the Canberra community is only possible due to our selfless and dedicated volunteers. We have over 200 volunteers who are able to treat patients in a whole host of situations, ranging from acute emergency situations to minor sprains and grazes.

The theme for National Volunteer Week this year is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine. This theme acknowledges that it is time to recognise, celebrate and thank our volunteers for the work they do; reconnect with the importance of giving back and supporting our community; and reimagine how we can better support our volunteers and the community (Volunteering Australia, 2021).

Over the last year our staff and volunteers, unfazed by the challenges thrown their way, continued to deliver our services to the community all whilst supporting Australia’s response to the bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful to have a dedicated team of volunteers who throughout 2020 asked “what more can we do to help our community?”

Our volunteers offer their services through a range of programs including Event Health Services, CBR NightCrew, and Community Education (First Aid in Schools, Project Resilience, and Project Survival). As soon as restrictions were lifted in the ACT last year, we had volunteers ready to be deployed into the community again to ensure continuity of care and community education.

Volunteering with us comes with a range of benefits including supporting the local community, developing your first aid skills with complimentary training, enhancing your leadership and teamwork skills, and being able to work in a supportive and passionate team. In the spirit of continually improving the St John Ambulance ACT volunteering experience, in 2021 we will be focusing on how to better deliver these benefits and support our volunteers both personally and professionally.

If you are interested in seeing firsthand accounts of what our volunteers do, and the friendly faces that come along with their support, keep an eye on our social media over the next week as we will be profiling a volunteer a day.

We are so grateful for everything our volunteers are able to do for us.
